Kiona, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003

Wine: Kiona, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003
Region: Washington State
Nose: Ripe cherry, vanilla, spice
Price & Place: $20, Binny’s

I love Cabs from Washington; maybe it’s the climate, perhaps the earth, or just the care. It’s probably all three but regardless it just seems to work! Kiona did a fantastic job. It’s a blend of 85% Cabernet, 9% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. I learned Kiona is an Indian word that means brown hills. The family owned winery helped pioneer the Washington wine industry when it planted some of the area’s first vines in 1975 (I was the ripe ol’ age of 1). This was very smooth, medium bodied, fruity but still complex. I enjoyed this wine on Christmas along with some others but this bottle stuck out from the rest. It was a tasty finish to the tour of wine we had.

Slainte!

Where can you get this in the Chicago area?

I picked up my bottle at Binny's (binnys.com). You may not be able to get the same vintage but Kiona wine has been pumping out some great wine!
